Brief description of functions
The CLSC Naskapi, in collaboration with the Naskapi Nation of Kawawachikach, is currently developing its service offering for pregnant women and preschool children. The Early Years Program is an integral part of this service offering, building on community strengths and cultural context to strengthen parenting and early learning
opportunities to improve children's health, well-being and learning outcomes at school entry and throughout their lives.
Under the supervision of the Head of Services – Social and Community Services, the family education worker is responsible for implementing the Early Years Program to promote and facilitate healthy pregnancies and enhance parenting capacity and early learning opportunities for infants and toddlers. The family education worker will adapt her practices to meet the needs of families as outlined in the Early Years Program Guide and in a culturally sensitive manner.
Specific functions and requirements
- Provide home visits to pregnant women and/or families with children under six months of age on a weekly basis and continue home visits until the child is 5 years old;
- Develop supportive relationships with mothers and other primary caregivers;
- Identify, prepare and deliver sessions at group events that respond to families’ needs and preferences;
- Introduce learning activities from the Early Years Toolbox that respond to infant/toddler’s interests and developmental stage;
- Participate in the screening of children 0-6 years old with difficulties;
- Participate and contribute as a member of the team in staff meetings, attend professional development workshops and other trainings as approved/required;
- Complete reporting on a weekly and monthly basis;
- Support for translation during home visit or follow-ups meeting with the nurse or other CLSC workers;
- Collaborate closely with various partners: daycare, school, Wellness and community-based organizations;
- Any other tasks requested by immediate superior.
REQUIREMENTS
- Must hold a high school diploma or equivalent;
- Speak Naskapi fluently and know Naskapi traditions, beliefs and customs;
- Ability to speak in English, spoken and written;
- Ability to communicate effectively and diplomatically, both verbally and in writing, with parents/caregivers, other professionals, co-workers and other organizations;
- Ability to build and maintain trust and cooperation of others;
- Ability to handle sensitive and complex situations with discernment, tact and discretion;
- Experience with clientele 0-12 years old (an asset);
- Experience in organizing activities in the field of health and social services, recreation or community organizations (an asset);
- Show a positive attitude, a great sense of responsibility and organization;
- Able to work autonomously as well as with others;
- Able to work with Word software and Outlook.
Working conditions
- The candidate will be working indoors in an office, and regularly in the homes of parents/caregivers with children and other family members. Work may occasionally occur in other locations to facilitate programming and larger group events. Some work may occur on the Land;
- A flexible work schedule is necessary to provide programming and family support;
- Hourly rate according to experience (between $26.38 and $35.22);
- 35h/week (full time) or flexible hours;
- Day shift, but may be required to work evenings or weekends for various activities;
- Isolation premium of $221.92/week of 35 hours (without dependent) or $391.18/week of 35 hours (with dependent); ); paid each pay period according to hours worked
- Cargo premium of $30.27/week. This premium is increased for a candidate with dependents;
- Group insurance;
- Pension plan (RREGOP).
